Etymology

According to author William Safire, "The most recent evolution of the -kini family is the tankini, a cropped tank top supported by spaghetti-like strings."^[6] The tankini is distinguished from the classic bikini by the difference in tops, the top of the tankini essentially being a tank top. The tankini top extends downward to somewhere between just above the navel and the top of the hips. The word is a neologism combining the tank of tank top with the end of the word bikini. This go-between nature of tankini has rendered its name to things ranging from a lemonade-based martini (Tankini Martini)^[7] to server architecture (Tankini HipThread).^[8] The Language Report, compiled by lexicographer Susie Dent and published by the Oxford University Press (OUP) in 2003, considers lexicographic inventions like bandeaukini and camkini, two variants of the tankini, important to observe.^[9]

History

Usage

Tankinis are suggested as an option for women who had gone through mastectomy, i.e. removal of one or both breasts by surgery,^[18] modest bust sizes,^[19] and long-torsos.^[20] For women who don't have washboard abs, Betts commented, "If you don't feel comfortable wearing a bikini, the tankini's an option that's sort of in between."^[2] In Think & Date Like a Man, fashion writer April Masini suggests wearing a tankini for women with smaller breasts and less-than-toned abdomens as the most flattering choice of beachwear, with the right amount of coverage along with the feeling of a two-piece suit.^[21] A not-too-close-fitting tanking, ensembled with a sarong, has been suggested for gymnophobia or the fear of nudity.^[22] Tankinis, sometimes divided in front exposing the navel, exist for pregnant women.

Variants

• Camkini: With spaghetti straps of a camisole top instead of tank-shaped straps over a bikini bottom. Ebony Fashion Fair's traveling fashion show in 2000 presented camikinis as one of the top trends that year.^[25] Point Sol, a fashion house, offers higher-waist bottoms and a sports camisoles as more sports-oriented swimsuit styles for volleyball and in-line skating.^[26]

• Bandeaukini: With a bandeau, a tube-like top, worn as the top.^[11] Alternatively called a bandini,^[27] its appeal grew fast among young women^[28] with bandeau tops edging into the sales of the classic tankini.^[29]

These Inis also makde a statement beyond the beach, as actress Halle Berry wore a skimpy bikini top with matching pants to the MTV Awards, fueling the trend of wearing bikini and bandeau tops out on the town.^[30] Fashion experts also suggest tankini-style wedding dresses for brides of a certain body-types, i.e. athletic long legs.^[31] The skirtini, which features a bikini top and a small, skirted bottom, is also an innovation for bikini-style clothes with more coverage.^[32]

The first and foremost requirement to look hot is to be of pleasing personality. You need to have social etiquette and an ability to befriend people. Inspite of their quirks and flaws, the reason why they have reached a level of being adored and admired is because they are confident in their skin. The last and most important step is to “not compromise”. Each individual has his/her share and set of principles. It is these principles that define the school of thought and way of life. In fact, it is these principles that make each one attractive and lovable in his/her own way. So, do not compromise on your principles, come what may. These principles will be what you are respected for, so don’t let go of them. Any opportunity that requires you to “drop the principles”, is not worth it!

Months before spring had arrived, fashion runways already begun revealing the new 2009 spring beauty trends. It's a mixed bag this spring of refreshingly healthy new looks as well as a few tried and true favorites from the fall and winter seasons. The hottest cosmetic trends veer toward a softer look with a touch of fantasy - soft, smoky eyes, sheer complexions and thick long faux eyelashes. Definitely, Glam is still in, but natural isn't out.
Shimmery neon makeup and hair are sure to make spring sizzle and eyes pop. Glam silvery faux eyelashes continue to add a sense of fantasy to everyday fashion. Bold, bright colors in gold, tangerine, and crimson along the eyes with thick eyelashes define the beauty trends of spring 2009. Also popular are brilliant purples and ocean blues for a dramatic eye popping effect. And if that's not enough to convince you that Glam is crossing boundaries, the spring of 2009 escorted in evening wear bling as an anytime of wear, day or night. Shimmering metallic colors like bronze, silver and gold add a glamorous yet cool ethereal quality to the season. This is certainly the season for the high street look, and those in favor are going to feel very much in their own element.

Creating newness within a super-identifiable framework is the challenge Threeasfour's Gabi, Adi, and Ange have chosen for themselves. For Spring, they more than delivered on that front. The clothes, with their curving seams, drippy layers, and floating hems, looked unmistakably theirs, but they looked fresh as well. That freshness came in the form of E8 prints (remember Spirographs? These look like Spirographs on speed) that decorated an off-the-shoulder cover-up and a shorter shift. More subtly, it was there in the form of the cotton jersey Threeasfour used to turn their avant-garde silhouettes into way, way beyond basic white tees, as well as in the cutout swimsuits that they've put on the runway before, but are now finally able to produce.

The trio took a more freewheeling approach to accessories, too; the conch-shell cross sections that cinched metallic-leather sashes and decorated the necklines of dresses were chicer by far than the crocheted snoods and sandals. The finale gown, laboriously made from hundreds of capiz-shell discs that shimmied preciously with the model's every tentative step, drew clamorous applause, but it's essentially a showpiece. It's the less obvious dresses—like an A-line trapeze in blush silk georgette with a lace inset swirling below the knees—that deserve the real praise.

With its new hot-ticket status, it was appropriate that Phi should have a last-day slot on the calendar, alongside Calvin and Ralph. But the show's timing was actually happenstance: Phi stuck with the slot it has always had, and the calendar changed around it. The same could almost be said of fashion. Season after season, Andreas Melbostad has quietly but powerfully carved his signature into the raw material of body-con dressing. The result? Sellout pieces—and uncountable imitations.

The clothes Melbostad sent down the runway—as Erin Wasson, Lauren Santo Domingo, Fabiola Beracasa, and assorted Trainas watched from the front row—were unmistakably his own. Uniforms and lingerie, his two evergreen interests, were combined in them…and it looked like Melbostad had declared war on the corset. He moved elastic straps from shoulder to slash-exposed thigh; delicate and decorative smocking became a textured carapace on a side-laced dress; and a brassiere became a plate of armor. All of this was executed in a stark palette of black and white, with lots of surface interest created by the choice of materials, including linen and suede. "I wanted to take tactile and natural fibers," the modest Norwegian said, "and put them into an urban context."

You could almost hear the personal orders being mentally rung up as a metal-encrusted biker jean, a chain-mail jacket with a peaked lapel, and the famous panel pants and biker jackets followed, one after another, down the runway. Despite the economy, Phi has had to go back into production with some of its highest-priced Fall pieces. It might have surprised Melbostad—but not us.

Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger, Kate Beckinsale, Rachel Weisz, Kerry Washington, Ali Larter, Sharon Stone, Bar Refaeli. That's a list of women who, in a single month this year, all wore dresses designed by Georgina Chapman. So why do they love Marchesa? "Do you know what? I don't actually know, but I'm so glad they do," laughed Chapman at today's Chelsea Art Museum presentation.

Well, Chapman might not be able to quite put her finger on it, but she clearly knows better than to mess with the unmistakable and ultraglamorous bones of the look. For Spring, her reference was Madame Butterfly, which led in a straight line to the formal kimono wrapping of stiff satin gowns and flat, obi-esque folds. More obliquely, there was something of a set-design element to the very matte black and white dresses that almost looked as if they'd been cut out of paper. And, of course, the drama of Chapman's signature sculptural and gravity-defying ruffles of horsehair is nothing short of operatic. But, with few exceptions, that's not the dress that elicits a swoon from actresses, like the trio of Blake Lively, Maggie Q, and Emmanuelle Chriqui that lit up the gown-ogling crowd today. Rather, it's something like the breathtaking Grecian draped column partly masked with carefully beaded black lace—simple but exquisite.
